Very often, we hear stories of organ donation. Though all these stories are motivating and inspiring, the number of people who are willing to donate their organs are still very poor. Why? Lack of awareness is the only answer.
Eye donation is an act of donating one's eyes after his/her death, to restore vision in people who are suffering from corneal blindness. Through eye donation, you are giving someone a ray of light. A person who donates eyes can provide the gift of sight to two blind people.
Importance of eye donation:
Eyes play a vital role in the human body. It is the window to the world. Without vision, our life is incomplete. It is estimated that 15 million people in India are blind. Out of this, 6.8 million people are blind due to corneal damage.
Corneal blindness is a type of vision loss when the cornea becomes cloudy. Irrespective of age, this disease can affect anyone. Replacing the cornea will restore the vision in such people. The process of extracting the cornea from the donor's eye and transplanting in the recipient's eye is known as keratoplasty.
Eye donation procedure:
Anyone can register for eye donation, irrespective of age, sex, and blood group. Visit the nearest eye bank in your locality. Mostly, this is located at the medical college or any eye hospital that is close to your area. Fill the registration and other formalities. After registration, you will be provided with an Eye Donation card.
Steps to be taken during eye donation:
It is crucial to have more volunteers for eye donation as the number of people awaiting a corneal transplant is outnumbering the available donor tissues. Donating eyes is always divine. It is a noble act of passing the god's gift to somebody who doesn't have it.
