Know about Cataracts.
Stay safe from Cataracts.

Eyesight is as important as any biological feature because it is an essential part of any aspect of life such as working, reading or taking a scenic stroll in the park. If cataracts cloud the vision, one loses the ability to admire the surroundings or people around them.

Cataract is a condition of the eye, which causes cloudy lens impairing the vision. It is noted that 70% of people above the age of 75 develop cataracts. Other than old age, eye injury, heredity, certain diseases, and medications may cause cataracts.

Cataract surgery is the only method of treatment for cataracts once the condition has worsened. It involves the removal of the clouded lens in the eye and then replacing it with an artificial lens for improving the quality of life.

Latest technologies have made both the surgery and the artificial lens presently available safer and more effective. For example, refractive cataract laser has increased surgical precision and development of multifocal lens and toric lens helps patients to see well in all conditions.

What is Bladeless Laser Cataract Surgery

The latest surgical method opted by surgeons to treat a cataract is the bladeless laser cataract surgery. This surgical procedure uses a computer controlled refractive bladeless cataract laser to perform the most critical part of the cataract surgery.

This procedure involves an ultrasound imaging equipment that is placed on the eye to map the surface of the eye lens and gather information. The computer then programs the laser to receive information on the exact location, size, and depth of the incision of the lens through the ultrasound device.

The surgeon then makes the incision in the cornea and opens the lens capsule with the help of a laser. An ultrasound probe is used to break down the lens affected by cataracts and then sucked out of the eye. It is then replaced with an artificial IOL lens. The incision made in the eye is self-healing and does not require any stitches.

Types of Bladeless Laser Cataract Surgery

There are different ways to surgically remove cataracts with the help of a computer-guided laser. These methods of surgery are as follows:

  • Lensx Laser Surgery is a procedure performed with the help of a computer-based laser device for accurate incision and placement of the artificial lens into the eye.
  • Bladeless Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery uses computer-guided imaging for the incision and exact placement of artificial IOL for the best outcome of vision. It is also used to cut the cataract into 4 to 6 pieces to reduce the amount of ultrasound energy used to break down cataracts.
Benefits

Complications of any surgery are inevitable but with the latest computer technology that assists to surgically remove cataracts, human error has come down to a minimum. The benefits of bladeless laser cataract surgery are are as follows:

  • Duration of surgery is shorter than the other traditional methods of surgery
  • Less recovery time as the procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis
  • Astigmatism is controlled
  • Decrease in surgical complications
  • No stitches required
  • Safe procedure
