Lens Implants

What are they?

Lens Implants are contact lenses that are implanted through a surgical procedure onto the eye as a treatment option to correct vision in patients suffering from either nearsightedness or farsightedness. This actually helps remove the hassle of wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses as they could be misplaced, lost or broken. Visian ICL or Implantable Contact Lens is a popular brand that is being used across the world.

Visian ICL is an excellent choice as it provides exceptional quality of vision. It has proven to deliver the sharper vision and provides high customer satisfaction.

The Lens implant procedure takes about 15 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis which means the patient can return home in a few hours after surgery.

The different types of Visian ICL are:

  • Implantable Collamer Lens is used for correcting both near and farsightedness.
  • Toric Implantable Collamer Lens is used to correct astigmatism along with nearsightedness.
How does it work?

Visian ICL is made of Collamer with a collagen base that is biocompatible with the eye as it occurs naturally in the body itself. Visian ICL implants are positioned into the eyes behind the iris and in front of the natural eye lens as opposed to traditional contact lenses that are placed on the surface of the eye.

Advantages of Lens Implants
  • With the help of lens implants such as Visian ICL, vision correction can be treated permanently by a safe and simple procedure.
  • The quality of vision can be noted right after the surgery and is much greater than any other vision correction options.
  • Implanting ICL does not require removal or reshaping of the eye tissues. Even though lens implants are a permanent solution, they can be removed or replaced at any given time depending on the patient.
  • The recovery time for this procedure is very short and pain-free and in most cases, the patient can resume work the very next day.
  • The lens implants are invisible and do not affect the functioning of the iris because of the positioning of the lens.
  • ICL prevents harmful UV rays from entering the eyes which decreases the chance of developing UV related eye disorders.
  • ICL does not cause dry eyes.
Implantation Procedure

The doctor might perform a YAG laser iridotomy a few weeks before the surgery, which is a painless procedure where numbing drops are applied on the eye followed by making a tiny opening in the iris using a laser beam. Eye drops are given to the patient to prepare for the implantation procedure.

The doctor will first administer a sedative to minimize the patient’s discomfort right before the surgery. Then two micro openings are created in the edges of the cornea for the positioning of the lens implants. The lens is then folded and loaded into a cartridge, which is then injected into the eye through the created openings.

As the lens is injected, it starts to unfold and positions itself in the eyes due to the special markings made on the lens implants.

After the surgery, the doctor will prescribe eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation. The patient will be advised to avoid rubbing the eyes for nearly a week after the surgery.
