Dry Eye Syndrome and LASIK

What is Dry Eye Syndrome?

It is the medical condition of the eye where a decrease in tears will cause irritation, redness, and discomfort. Dry eye syndrome can be caused due to the following reasons,

  • Computer Vision Syndrome
  • Systemic problems such as rheumatoid arthritis
Computer Vision Syndrome

An increase in computer use for studies or work purposes has become the most common cause for dry eyes. Studies show that 75 to 90% of computer users undergo vision problems or eye discomfort.

Symptoms for this condition of the eye are as follows,

  • Difficulty focusing
  • Double vision
  • Eye fatigue
  • Headache
  • Back pain
  • Dry eyes
  • Neck stiffness
  • Sensitivity to lighting

Treatment for computer vision syndrome includes

  • Decrease the amount of time spent in front of a computer or other mobile devices.
  • Make sure to use computers in a fully lighted room.
  • Blinking your eyes helps to prevent dry eyes while using the computer
  • 20-20-20 Rule. This rule states that in every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
  • Do not sit closer than 18-24 inches from the computer screen.
  • Tilting the monitor slightly below the eye level helps to reduce eye discomfort.
LASIK

LASIK, also known as Laser Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis, is a medical procedure performed on the eye as a treatment method for refractive errors. Wearing glasses or contact lenses can be a hassle for some individuals. LASIK offers a clearer and better vision compared to other vision treatments in an easy, painless way that needs no recovery time.

Anyone over 18 years with healthy eyes and stable vision for a minimum of a year can undergo LASIK treatment. The contraindications for LASIK include pregnancy, autoimmune diseases and extreme powers such as -15.

OptiLASIK

Each human eye is different from each other similar to human fingerprints. OptiLASIK is the latest technology that is used for correcting refractive errors. It involves generating a map of every unique eye that helps to perform a specialized and effective procedure and is the most trusted procedure in the world.

The OptiLASIK procedure uses the WaveLight EX500 Excimer Laser, which is one of the most advanced laser systems. It provides the following:

  • Mapping of the eye shape allowing individualized Laser Vision Correction
  • Delivers consistent results
  • Offers multiple and smooth treatment options
  • Provides a high level of comfort
  • Guarantees excellent accuracy
  • Has a proven safety record

LASIK is a daytime procedure. An eye exam is first performed to measure and create a unique treatment method for each individual. Local anaesthesia is given to numb the eyes after which a flap is created on the cornea to lift it back. The laser is then introduced to accurately reshape the cornea. The surgeon will then reposition the flap that will act as a natural bandage.

The recovery period is usually of short duration and the patient can resume everyday activities the very next day. In some cases, irritation might be present that will pass within a few days. Vision may be slightly blurry at first but generally clears up in a day or two.
