Neuro Ophthalmology
Neuro-Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that deals with eye disorders that are caused by the defects in the visual pathway. Visual data from the eyes is transmitted to the visual center in the brain through this pathway.
Some of the issues in the visual pathway can cause vision problems such as sudden loss of vision, gradual loss of vision or double vision due to abnormal movement of the eyes.
Some of the disorders that are treated under this branch of medicine are:
This type of Optic neuritis is the main cause of a defective visual pathway that is the swelling of the optic nerve due to inflammation. The severity of inflammation of the optic nerve leads to vision problems ranging from a decrease in vision to total blindness. Optic neuritis mostly occurs suddenly.
The signs and symptoms for optic neuritis usually include the following:
Diagnostic methods such as color vision, side vision, and the reaction of the pupil to light are done to confirm the condition.
Treatment for optic neuritis includes medications, along with administration of intravenous drugs to regain the vision in most cases.
This condition causes the optic nerve to swell because of increased pressure inside the head or skull. It can also be caused due to an increase in fluid pressure inside the brain.
In the beginning, there is not a big decrease in vision loss but long duration of swelling can lead to the death of the nerve fibers, resulting in severe visual loss. Optic neuritis affects both the eyes, in most cases.
Symptoms for this condition include the following:
Diagnostic methods such as CT scan, MRI scan, etc., are performed in order to identify the cause of swelling of the nerve.
Treatment for this condition is done to prevent severe vision loss, as well as, to restore existing vision. Therefore, the best defence is an early diagnosis so that the cause can be identified and treated, preventing further damage.
Amrit Hospital was conceptualized with an aim to strive to provide patients with a safe place to get treated. We strive to put our patients’ comfort and treatability above our own concerns. Therefore, we stress on using the latest technology in terms of biomedical equipment, laboratory, surgeries, etc. Amrit Hospital has opted for the latest in LASIK technologies to fight the ophthalmological issues that affect the majority of the patients.
