What is it?

General medicine and Geriatrics is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, management, and care for older patients. Geriatrics is the medical specialty that concerns with the diseases of aging. Geriatrics usually involves the diagnosis or treatment of patients above the age of 60.

Ailments that fall under Geriatrics Medicine mostly comprises of health conditions that cannot be cured as of now. These health conditions are normally seen in older adults. Once affected by these health issues, various treatment options including lifestyle changes are necessary to cope with the diseases.

General medicine and Geriatrics department manages the entire aspect of older adults and the health conditions that each elderly individual goes through. In order to simplify these factors, this department can be divided into the following,

  • Comprehensive Care focuses on individuals with undefined symptoms such as shortness of breath, abdominal pain, chest pain etc.
  • Collaboration helps to guide patients if in need of surgeons or other physicians.   
  • Preventive Medical Care comprises of routine check-up for diagnosing certain conditions. This includes pap smears, mammograms, routine colon cancer screening, cholesterol screening, and blood pressure screening.

  • Oxygen Monitors are used to measure the level of oxygen in the patient’s blood. If the oxygen level is low, oxygen cylinders along with masks are available.
  • Suction Devices are used to clear the airway of the presence of blood, saliva, vomit or other secretions for uninterrupted breathing. Suctioning can prevent lung diseases such as pulmonary aspiration.  
  • ICU Facilities are a necessity in any clinic. This is because some patients need intensive monitoring, nursing care, and complex respiratory support depending on the severity of health condition.
