What is it?

Neonatology is a field of medicine in which newborns are treated for conditions such as birth defects, low weight during birth, limited growth in uterus, premature birth, etc. A doctor of neonatology is called a neonatologist. In neonatology, severely sick newborns are kept in neonatal intensive care unit or NICUs. Newborn infants who need extra attention to their health are the main patients in discipline of neonatology.

Neonatological ailments

Following is some of the conditions that are managed in neonatology:

  • Preterm birth: When a baby is born sooner than 37 weeks of pregnancy, it is called a preterm birth. The reasons of preterm birth can be divided into two groups – spontaneous preterm labor and labor introduced before 37 weeks of pregnancy. The preterm labor is characterized by four or more contractions of uterus every hour. True labor is accompanied by dilation of cervix and effacement. Due to the preterm birth, newborn infant may develop damaging effects on various body systems such as respiratory system, cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal system, and neurological system.
  • Pulmonary hypoplasia: In pulmonary hypoplasia, the growth of lungs is not completed. It leads to reduced alveoli, both in terms of their size and number. It usually occurs along with other conditions of fetus that hinder the normal growth of lungs.
  • Birth defect: Birth defects or congenital malformations are present since the birth of a child. Various risk factors are known to lead to birth defects such as alcohol consumption, genetic predisposition, smoking, exposure to toxic substances and radiation, and not taking enough nutrients. Malformations arising at birth can be grouped as function or development-associated and structure associated malformations. Common birth defects are as follows:

Structure associated congenital malformations

  • Clubfoot
  • Spina bifida
  • Cleft lip
  • Defects arising in heart such as atrial septal defect, tetralogy of Fallot, tricuspid atresia etc.

Function or development associated malformations:
